In 2005, as a result of the success of Cydcoed phase 1, Mumbles Development Trust secured a second Cydcoed grant for a 3 year scheme to establish a local social enterprise to look after and manage most of the local woodlands of Mumbles, which give the village its unique character and tourist appeal.

To help ensure the future sustainability of this important community initiative, Mumbles Development Trust has established Broadleaf Woodland Enterprise, as a Community Interest Company (CIC) tasked primarily to improve woodland stock by providing local woodland management and public open space management services.

It is envisaged that the range of work to be undertaken by Broadleaf Woodland Enterprise will include:

  • Woodland Crafts – made from locally sourced wood.
  • Management of allotment sites, including providing a Green Gym, Community Orchard, and Tree Nursery.
  • Community Workshops – teaching allotment maintenance, woodland crafts and healthy living.
  • Procurement Contracts – managing other local woodlands on behalf of their communities.
  • Annual Programme of Community Woodland Events.
  • Educational activities with local schools – including providing woodland wildlife educational packs and organising an ‘adopt a woodland’ scheme.
  • Guided Woodland Walks and Talks – as an educational and tourist service.

Broadleaf Woodland Enterprise is establishing a consortium of professional woodland specialists and environmental contractors working alongside local enthusiasts, to carry out local woodland maintenance and management work.
